Everybody talks about travelling but nobody talks about the challenges that every traveller has to face for the first time especially, when you are alone. Who doesn't want to free the noisy city and sit on the lap of nature? It is darn easy to have overwhelming fear hold you back for years, time to come out of it. You need to. Embrark the new journey and create a new belief. Here are the fundamental tips to overcome your fear:

  1. Stay in cafes. They make you feel less alone, safe, and you get a feel for the culture of the city you’re in.
  2. If you don’t like your hotel or don’t feel comfortable in it, take all that you need with you and leave in the morning and come back late enough that you are so exhausted that you’ll just pass out. And do your work from somewhere else.
  3. Eat when you can and where you can. You never know when things will close and you’ll be left without food. Convenience stores are usually open late, but just to make sure, buy an extra sandwich or salad when you go out to eat so that if you find yourself hungry and all the restaurants or food places are closed, you have a backup. Keep it in your fridge in your hotel, or your bag with you. Also, buy water. Always have water with you.
  4. Buy a transportation pass for the week, or month, however long you stay. It’s worth it, and you’ll never have to worry about buying tickets, tokens, or having enough cash on you. Most cities have good deals for access cards, and you can make the best out of it and travel all around. It’s also a lot less touristy than taking a taxi everywhere.
  5. If you have dietary restrictions, do your research on where you can go and what you can eat beforehand.
  6. Have a goal or plan in mind for each day. Even if it’s something as small as going to a certain restaurant, or seeing a particular monument. As much as I like going with the flow, I found that, especially when travelling alone, I felt a lot more comfortable and at ease with my surroundings and myself when I had a small plan in mind. You can plan the rest of your day around that one thing, but I think what helped me a lot was having a starting point.
  7. Bring a journal. Or write on your blog. Let your thoughts out. I found this eased my stress and put me in flow when I was beginning to get anxious. I’d go to a cafe, and just write. I’d people-watch, drink some tea or coffee, and just relax. I had nowhere to be, and nothing pressing to do. My thoughts would come and go and it was peaceful. I also was quite creative at these times. Being still while everyone around was discussing, laughing, working, walking, or reading. I felt a part of them, interconnected, but at the same time, I was my being.

As scary and maybe stressful as travelling alone may be, you discover so much more than if you were with other people. Little by little, you become at ease with yourself. You listen to your instincts and trust your gut. Although I did see some friends on my trip, the times when I was alone, I was present. I was in the moment, paying attention to what was going on around me instead of paying attention to the person I was with. You focus on different things when you’re on your own.
